So my girlfriend and I went on Sunday the 28th of October. A glorious fall day. We expected it would be busy when we arrived at 2pm and it was. But not horribly so. It was our first encounter with the new entrance area and jeez, it was big league. Very impressive! A short walk in from our spot in Parking Lot D. Not bad at all.
We made a beeline for the Patriot just because we both adore it. Not an awful wait. Maybe 20 minutes. Add in extra time for wanting to sit in the front. We'd have made it on much sooner if we'd settled for another seat but since the Patriot REALLY feels like flying when you're in front, that's where we rode. They were running two trains and seemed to take slightly longer than normal on pre-ride harness-and-belt checks, resulting in minor delays for the second train, which ended up sitting three or four minutes. But we agreed we'd rather have a safe trip than a quick one!
Being October 28, the water rides were drained. No Viking Voyager. And no Fury of the Nile. It was so strange to see the Fury of the Nile drained and realize just how shallow it is. The rafts were visible on the Mamba's lift hill....all of them neatly tucked in where the stage at the Forum used to be, I think. An odd sight, to say the least, and one that certainly said "The season's almost over!"
Mamba's wait was far less and we were in the station house immediately, waiting only two trains for our ride. They were running two trains on Mamba, Patriot, and Prowler, and things ran smooth as glass. We rode Patriot twice, Mamba twice, and the sensational Prowler three times. Great day for coasters! Stunning perfect fall weather and a shrinking crowd at the park meant wait times near zero.
Food options were narrowed. Many food stands were closed. Nothing to really complain about, given it was sort of the last day of operations before Winterfest kicks off. We ended up getting a (very) so-so meal at the Crabfries place. Meh. Worlds of Fun has never, EVER had what you'd call amazing food options. I keep hoping they will but I guess at the end of the day, that's not why people go.
The weirdest part of the day was that everyone was taking the pumpkins from the Haunt. Seriously. HUGE pumpkins. Small pumpkins. People hopping fences onto grassy spots to plucky pumpkins from displays where they artfully spelled out BOO or HAUNT. Very surreal.
Still, I'm going to call it one of the best days I've had there in a long time. A reminder of how great it can be when you plan for the right day with a smaller-than-normal crowd and the crew has all of the marquee rides up and running smooth. Hats off to you guys...we had an amazing time!
